Abstracte kunst is moderne kunst die niet probeert een nauwkeurige weergave van een visuele werkelijkheid te geven, maar in plaats daarvan kleur, lijnen en vormen gebruikt om haar effect te bereiken.
Abstracte kunst komt voor in de schilderkunst en in de beeldhouwkunst. Er zijn ook veel kunstwerken die deels abstract en deels figuratief zijn. Veel kunstenaars werkten in abstracte en andere vormen van moderne kunst.
Zuiver abstracte kunst is een uitvinding van de 20e eeuw. Het is voortgekomen uit eerdere vormen van moderne kunst, maar het is misschien wel de enige stroming die absoluut modern is. Zij heeft geen wortels in vroegere kunst (zoals wij die term tegenwoordig gebruiken).
